Deutsche Welle was commissioned to "provide listeners and viewers abroad with a comprehensive picture of political, cultural and economic life in Germany and present and explain German positions on important issues". This is how the 1997 Deutsche Welle Act defines our mission statement.
Deutsche Welle does indeed not only report about Germany, but, of course, about events around the world. We focus especially on what is happening in our target areas, and particularly so when they are regions torn by crisis and conflict and in which there is no freedom of opinion and the Press – and that still goes for two-thirds of humankind.
